Virtual Telephone Triage and Consultation Skills Training – 6 hours learning time

Most clinicians are now expected to use the telephone as the first point of contact with their patients. This method of assessment carries significant risks, but risks that can be managed if calls are handled appropriately. Some clinicians simply want to validate their skills, whilst many clinicians have never  been formally trained in this sub speciality.

This course will be delivered virtually using the Zoom platform and will provide you with an understanding of how to practise safely, effectively and efficiently by giving you realistic tools and techniques in telephone triage and consultations. We will  use interactive exercises, calls and group work to look at what’s needed to care for patients when we can’t see them. We will also briefly explore some of the issues involved in video consulting.

You will leave armed with useful solutions for everyday practice and the more challenging demands of caring for patients over the phone. The course is suitable for all GPs, nurses, paramedics and Pharmacists.

Learning Aims

  •  Provide knowledge and understanding of how to carry out appropriate, cost effective and safe triage
  •  Improve confidence in telephone triage by using a structure for your information gathering in the absence of visual confirmation
  •  Understand the communication and questioning skills required
  •  Discuss and practice safe and comprehensive history taking within a telephone triage context
  •  Explore some of the legal issues of telephone assessments including confidentiality, documentation and safety netting
